When should you book your newborn photo session in Bend, Oregon?
TLDR/quick answer: The best time to book your newborn photo session is during your second trimester — before Bend's summer baby boom fills up photographer calendars. This guide breaks down the three main newborn session styles (hospital, studio, and lifestyle) and the safety standards every parent should look for before booking.
While you are busy prepping the nursery and dreaming of those first sweet weeks with your baby, you might be wondering exactly when to get your newborn photo session on the calendar. To help you navigate the planning process, I’ve put together a guide on when to book your newborn photoshoot in Central Oregon. This guide also covers the different styles of newborn sessions available, and exactly what you should look for to ensure your sweet baby stays safe and comfortable throughout the process.
Before we get started -
Hi, I'm Elise — a Bend, Oregon newborn photographer also serving Redmond, Sisters, and Sunriver. My camera has been my anchor through every season of motherhood, which is why I care about getting to know your family first before I photograph you.
When should you book your newborn photo session?
Your second trimester in pregnancy is called the golden one for a reason. Not only do you feel better in your second trimester, but it’s time to get all the things done. Researching and booking your newborn photo session is one of those things!
Booking a newborn photographer well before the baby comes is especially important in an area like Bend, Oregon where there is a baby boom every summer. Between scheduling your prenatal appointments at places like St. Charles Health System, or finding a doula agency to work with like Central Oregon Birth or the Deep Roots Birth Collective, your calendar fills up quickly. Well, photographer calendars also get busy!
If you wait until your baby is earthside to schedule photos, you may not get a spot with the photographer that you really want.
A big bonus of booking your newborn photo session during the second trimester is that the photographer you want to work with may also offer maternity sessions. When you’re researching your newborn photographer, also take a peek at their services to see if maternity photography is one of them.
Many photographers will offer a package deal or discount for booking maternity and newborn photography together. For example, I offer new parents a discounted maternity petite session as an add-on when they book an in-home newborn photoshoot with me.

What are the different types of photography available for newborn photo sessions?
There are three common types of newborn photo sessions: newborn hospital photos, which are called ‘fresh 48’ sessions, studio newborn photography, and newborn lifestyle photoshoots which usually take place in your home.
What should I know about newborn hospital photos?
Newborn hospital photos, usually called Fresh 48, are unique in that they take place in the birthing center or hospital within the first two days of a baby's life. Fresh 48 sessions often have a very raw, documentary feeling to them as working within a birth center or hospital room has its limitations in regards to scenery and lighting.
Newborn hospital photos are a unique way to document those very first moments with your new baby; however, they can also have some big downsides to them.
Pros:
Captures your baby's very first hours, in the actual place they were born
Raw, documentary feel — real emotion, not posed
Cons:
Hospital/birth center visitor policies may restrict who can be present, or whether photography is allowed at all
Birth complications or extra medical care needed can make a session impossible or undesirable so soon after delivery
Recovery — especially after a c-section — can make this timing physically difficult for mom
Personally, I needed to have c-sections to deliver my babies earthside after some medical complications. Both times I was very swollen and needed extra time to recover after the birth, so newborn hospital photos were not a good fit for me.
Pro tip: When booking a Fresh 48 session, ask if the photographer has a back-up plan if you are not able to take photos within the first 48 hours of birth.
What are the main differences between studio newborn photography and a newborn lifestyle photoshoot?
Posed studio newborn photography can be a beautiful way to remember the little details of your precious baby. Parents may choose this type of portrait session because they only want pictures of their baby (not themselves), because they like the props or themes posed images can produce, or because they want a very polished image of their newborn baby. That being said, parents should be aware that newborn photography is not regulated in terms of safe practices for photographing your baby.
Newborn lifestyle photoshoots tend to focus less on perfection in the photos and more on the beauty within the chaos of welcoming a new baby into your family. Personally, I love photographing in-home newborn lifestyle photoshoots because there’s nothing that quite matches the connection and love between parents and their new baby.
Parents may choose a portrait session at home with their new baby because it feels more relaxed, they do want to be part of the pictures, or because they are not interested in posed photos with props. Don’t fret about prepping your home for newborn photos - it’s much simpler than you might think.
Which style of newborn photo session is best for your family?
When deciding between these styles, think about how you want to remember this chapter. Choosing which type of newborn photo session to book for your family really depends on what you think fits your story and needs best.
If you have a high risk pregnancy or are at all concerned about your delivery, then a Fresh 48 session is probably not the best option for you. If you love a highly styled look focusing solely on the baby, newborn photography might be your best fit. Or, if you feel like you want the complete story of welcoming your new little baby into your life, then a newborn lifestyle photoshoot is probably the best match.
Pro tip: If you’re unsure about which style you like, look at example images online to see which you’re drawn to.
How can you find a newborn photographer that you love (and will want to come back to)?
Although you’re currently looking for a photographer to take photos of your sweet newborn baby, let me tell you that children grow. Fast.
You may want to consider putting all this hard word in researching a photographer to good use by finding someone that you can continue to work with in the future. It’s a good idea to know whether your preferred newborn photographer also photographs families, and if so what style of photography they do with families. I offer family portrait sessions in addition to my newborn services for exactly this reason - babies grow!
If you’ve fallen in love with newborn studio photography of a photographer that only does newborn work (yes, these specialist photographers do exist), then keep in mind that you’re going to need to find a new photographer as your child grows. But that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck - it’s very possible that the newborn photographer you love knows reputable family photographers in your area. Ask for a referral, and they might be able to give you some names to research.
What are important safety considerations for your new baby in newborn photo sessions?
While newborn photos are a beautiful way to preserve these fleeting days, your baby’s safety is the absolute priority. Newborns have fragile bodies, delicate airways, and no muscle control. Whether you choose a studio session or an in-home experience, a professional photographer should always put safety above the "perfect" shot.
What does safe newborn photography look like?
You are never separated from your baby: A reputable photographer will never ask you to leave the room. You should always be able to see, hear, and respond to your little one's needs.
The session follows the baby’s timeline: Newborns need frequent feedings, diaper changes, and soothing. A safe session is never rushed; it includes plenty of breathing room for comfort breaks. Trustworthy photographers know that responding to your baby’s cues and cries always takes priority over getting the perfect shot.
Posing is natural and supported: Complex, upright, or hanging newborn poses require specialized safety training. Safe photographers prioritize gentle, natural positions and use editing software like Photoshop to composite images safely rather than risking a baby's balance to get the shot in-camera.

Baby safety is a top reason why I chose to specialize in lifestyle in-home newborn photography. Because I am documenting your real life as it happens, your baby stays within your arms, is never forced into unnatural positions, and every single diaper change, feeding, and soothe-break is built right into our time together. Your baby’s safety and comfort guide the entire session.
What should you consider before booking a newborn lifestyle photoshoot?
Newborn babies are notorious for being hungry, having a poopy diaper, or needing snuggles almost constantly. Plus, new parents are often tired from a lack of sleep and adjusting to life with a new addition to their family. For this reason, extra time is usually built into a newborn session to keep everyone comfortable and still have plenty of time to capture those treasured memories.
Pro Tip: Most in-home newborn sessions will range in length from 1.5 to 2 hours to adequately cover extra time for baby’s needs.
Choosing an in-home newborn session is incredibly practical for life in Central Oregon. Whether we are dealing with unpredictable winter snow in Bend, summer smoke, or just the logistical hurdle of packing up a diaper bag for the first time, you don’t have to go anywhere. I come directly to your home, allowing you to relax in your own space while I capture your family in the beautiful, natural light of your own environment.
My promise to clients as a newborn photographer:
A lot of parents focus on the cost of newborn photography or what to wear for newborn photos, but safety precautions and the specific policies of the photographer are much more important to learn about prior to booking a session.
When you are interviewing Central Oregon newborn photographers, don't be afraid to ask the hard questions. You shouldn’t have to guess how your session will play out. To give you complete peace of mind, here is exactly what I plan for with every single newborn client who invites me into their home:
Flexible scheduling: We tentative-book based on your due date, and officially set the date once your baby arrives.
Grace for medical complications: If your birth story requires extra healing time or a longer hospital stay, we simply adjust the timeline. Your recovery comes first.
No rush on baby's age: While the traditional "under two weeks" window is popular for studio posing, lifestyle in-home photos are beautiful at three, four, or six weeks old.
Built-in breathing room: My sessions typically last around 2 hours, ensuring there is zero stress when your baby needs to stop to eat, have a diaper changed, or be soothed.
Bringing a new baby home is a beautiful, whirlwind experience, and you deserve to have these fleeting moments captured safely and beautifully. If you are looking for a lifestyle newborn photographer in Bend, Oregon who will bring a calm, supportive presence to your home and preserve your family's true story, I would love to connect with you.
Commonly asked questions about newborn photo sessions:
When should I book my newborn photo session?
Ideally during your second trimester — Bend has a baby boom every summer, and photographer calendars fill up fast. Booking early also gives you the option to add on a discounted maternity session if your photographer offers one.
What's the difference between newborn hospital, studio, and lifestyle photography?
Hospital (Fresh 48) sessions capture the first two days of life in the birthing center itself, studio sessions are posed and polished, and lifestyle sessions happen at home and focus on the real, unposed chaos of welcoming a new baby. Which one fits best depends on whether you want highly styled images or the full story of those early days.
How long does an in-home newborn session take?
Most in-home newborn sessions run 1.5 to 2 hours, which builds in plenty of room for feeding, diaper changes, and soothing without rushing.
Is newborn photography regulated for safety?
No — newborn photography isn't formally regulated, which is why it matters to ask your photographer directly about their safety practices, especially around posing.
