What is documentary family photography?

photographing your most honest moments with each other.

Documentary photos create a time capsule for your family.

As a documentary photographer for your family, my work focuses on capturing the real details of your everyday life as events unfold. I affectionately call these sessions, “This is Life”, because everyday moments matter more than you think.

Documentary sessions are more hands off than traditional family sessions - meaning there is prep guidance to help you get ready, but minimal interruption during the actual session. What the camera captures is just your family being yourselves - totally unscripted.

These aren’t the photos for today; they’re the photos you’ll want twenty years from now to remember exactly what life was like. If that resonates with you, then you’re in the right place.

Where can we take documentary photos?

A session in your home or at a favorite local spot in Central Oregon.

Consider a documentary session as photographing a “day in the life”. A lot of documentary sessions take place at your home because that is where family life is built. Your everyday routines and rhythms are a huge part of what defines your family as yours.

For families with young children, this can be bath time and brightly colored pajamas, pretend play, or those uber-messy meals with toddlers. The possibilities are endless here.

Or if your family loves being outdoors - explore Central Oregon’s nature in a documentary session that captures that sense of adventure. Do you love camping? Hiking? Splashing around and getting muddy? Those are beautiful childhood moments - and imagine being able to gift yourselves and your children those memories in photographs.

From the wonders of young childhood to the individual personalities of teens, let your family’s everyday shine brightly.

What does a documentary photographer take pictures of?

Feel at ease with activities your family already loves.

Have you ever thought about the space between moments? When something catches your eye or heart; the moments when sparks of joy settle into your soul and you feel it. For me, it’s when my sons tuck their little bodies into mine for snuggles. I would bottle up that feeling if I could.

A documentary photographer looks for these moments during your favorite activities and everyday routines. Do you have a special weekend tradition that your family loves? Pancake Sundays, cozy afternoon moments, or winding walks along a trail - let’s photograph it. Do you love gardening? Great, let’s dig in some dirt. Is there a particular pair of shoes your toddler is obsessed with? Pull them out and let’s style you around that.

There are tons of details about your life right now that are special - Pinterest perfection not required. (I promise)

You don’t need to plan anything elaborate for documentary photos. I’ll help you notice what already matters.

Frequently Asked Questions about Documentary Photography

  • Seemingly routine moments are actually quite magical. When you're wrapped up in the day-to-day of life, there are a lot of details that can be missed. Documentary photos allow you to witness your relationships, your actions, and yourselves from an artistic perspective. Let me help you see the beauty in your everyday.

  • If your family hates looking at the camera, or dressing up, or you know what you’ve got right now is gold - documentary is right for you. Still unsure?  Contact me and let’s chat about your family - I can help you figure it out.

  • I believe in the power of human heart, creativity, and instinct. For that reason, I don’t use AI software to select or edit imagery. I hand-edit every single photo in every single gallery. Typical turnaround is about three weeks from your session date.

  • Not paying attention to the camera may seem like an odd idea. I’ll help you prep your family for it. On the day of the session, we can sink into it slowly. Kids tend to get involved in activities quickly, and I’m pretty good at slipping into the background, too.

  • I take a creative approach to documentary work. You can expect to see scenes with everyone included, close-in detail shots, and views of your life from different perspectives. Together, these photos will be a story of your family at this moment in time. Best of all, you’ll see the beauty of yourselves rooted in the truth of who you are.

  • I tend to edit mostly in color, with select black and white images mixed in. I choose black and white images carefully for a visual or emotional element. If you have a particular preference, we can chat about that prior to your session.
