Bend, Oregon Photographer Elise Souders for Happy Family Photos

Before we dive into lifestyle family posing, hi I’m Elise.

I’m a Bend, Oregon photographer that specializes in storytelling photography for Central Oregon families through lifestyle portrait sessions and documentary photography sessions. I look for the scenes that are more than just a pretty picture - they’re the moments that will stand the test of time. If that sounds good to you, then you’re in the right place.

How to get (truly) happy family photos here in Central Oregon (& beyond)

There isn’t one specific pose or prompt that will fit every family and create genuine photos. If you came here looking for a checklist of standard lifestyle family posing tips, you won't find them here—and your photos will be better for it.

The true secret to happy family photos is creating a sense of comfort for your family in front of the camera. For this to happen, you need to remember that the purpose of taking family photos isn’t to gain likes on social media, the purpose is to preserve your memories.

Skip looking for lifestyle family posing tips and look for storytelling for your family instead.

Guiding poses helps people feel like they know what to do in front of the camera, and giving prompts helps break the ice and loosen tension. But while they can create fleeting grins, neither poses nor prompts will create true happiness in your family photos. Genuine emotion comes from one place: your family, and your connection to one another.

Ditch an expectation of perfect photos, and instead focus on capturing what actually matters to your family in this moment of time. It’s not just faces that change as children grow - it’s also their personalities, their interests, how they move, and what makes them laugh.

The little details are what you’ll want bottled up right alongside happy smiles in your family photos twenty years from now. These are also the types of details storytelling photographers look for during sessions.

TO GET TRULY HAPPY FAMILY PHOTOS, DESIGN A SESSION AROUND YOUR LIFE AS IT IS RIGHT NOW - NOT A POSED VERSION OF YOURSELVES.

Hire a family photographer that you trust.

Capturing storytelling moments in family photos requires creating space for connection and vulnerability. Being vulnerable in front of the camera is more than just being comfortable; it requires trust with your photographer. While many families prioritize finding a photographer in a certain budget range or certain type of editing style, I suggest seeking a photographer whose work you connect with emotionally.

Quick list of what to look for in a storytelling photographer:

+ They have a portfolio that you connect with on a deeper level

+ Photos contain motion, details, and imperfections

+ The photographer connects with clients (and stays in touch) prior to the photo session

PICK A BEND, OREGON FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER WHOSE WORK YOU CONNECT WITH EMOTIONALLY, NOT JUST ONE WHO FITS A Certain budget.

Why my work has moved beyond poses for family photography.

When I first opened my business in 2019, I was living in Hawai’i and deeply connected with the local military community. I had the honor of photographing several military homecomings when service members returned from deployment to be reunited with their loved ones. I trace my love of storytelling and documentary photography back to this season in my life because capturing those reunions are fast, fleeting, and there’s zero space for directing people while it’s happening.

While we always captured a handful of photos of the reunited family smiling at the camera after the initial rush of greeting each other, those aren’t the moments that the families loved most. Everyone always gushed over the story - waiting for the service member to return, the first sight of them, and the emotional rush when they got to hug each other again for the first time in months. They loved the story of the reunion, not just one happy photo.

My love for storytelling in photography was born from these homecoming sessions. It is truly special to witness and document precious memories that will live on in photos forever.

Lifestyle family photography ideas for capturing memories in Bend & surrounding Central Oregon.

While I have a special love for documentary photography because of the storytelling possibilities, I recognize not everyone feels comfortable going without direction during a family session. With this in mind, lifestyle photography ideas that create space for storytelling include activities or a central theme that create space for a family to be themselves. Creating space for families to relax and be themselves will always feel more real than a photo that uses a prompt to elicit a reaction.

Activities that let your personalities shine naturally

Families engaged in activities will more naturally interact with one another. Having an activity to focus on will take your mind off of the camera’s presence and create space for you to simply be together as a family. With this space, the personalities of each member of your family will have a chance to shine.

Activities that work best depend on the family being photographed, but I generally try to follow the interests of family members and pay close attention to the age(s) of the kid(s) in the family. With young children, simple activities that bring lots of interaction and joy to your photos are things like blowing bubbles, having a dance party, or playing with a favorite toy set. For families with older children, activities that allow for movement typically work really well. Think games like “Red Light, Green Light”, playing with water in a backyard pool, or choosing a pastime that your family enjoys together all create space for interaction.

Themes that set you up for success in Central Oregon

Setting up a session with a theme doesn’t necessarily mean using props, a backdrop, or a certain style of outfits. It can be as simple as saying “let’s go explore somewhere beautiful together”, or a bit more focused like, “let’s have fun at the Deschutes County Fair together.”

For family sessions, a theme can inform location choice for the photos and create expectations that are easier for everyone in the family to follow.

Choosing a beautiful location for photos with your children means selecting a spot where kids can freely roam and gives everyone permission to let loose. We can escape into the open shade of Shevlin Park or take advantage of golden fields in Sunriver. You can choose to enjoy the Dry Canyon Trail in Redmond, or use the dramatic mountain backdrops of Sisters.

Choosing to take family photos at a county fair means giving your family freedom to have fun and get silly. Both of those scenarios are much easier to navigate and create less friction than telling your family members to smile and behave during the session.

If you’re ready to ditch fake smiles or prompts that might land awkwardly, let’s chat. You don't need to worry about your kids behaving or standing still for my camera—their energy is exactly what makes your story beautiful. I have a limited number of spots open for family sessions every month so that I get to know you and create from an intentional space. Get in touch to book a session today. Let's document what your family actually feels like right now.
