What is Thoughtful Guidance for a family photoshoot?

Have you ever shown up to a family photoshoot feeling completely underprepared?

Perhaps you worried about how your kids would behave. Perhaps you were not sure of the outfits you picked. Perhaps you didn’t know much about the photographer because after booking your session, you didn’t hear from them for weeks. It’s easy to be uncomfortable in a situation like that - especially when you’re trying to plan a family photoshoot without clear guidance.

What many family photoshoot experiences look like -

You search an area for a photographer - or maybe start searching what to wear for a family photoshoot first - and land on someone’s page. Their work looks good to you, so you send off a message about booking family photos. Perhaps you send inquiries to a few photographers, covering your bases for date availability. Then once someone confirms they can fit your family in during a time that works for you and you like the details (cost, location), you book the session.

You spend the next several weeks crowdsourcing information from Facebook pages or blog posts about what to wear, how to prep your kids, etc. Then you meet up with the photographer - and hope for the best.

But what if there’s a better - more supported - way to take family photos?

If you’re planning a family photoshoot and wondering how to actually feel prepared, this is where thoughtful guidance makes all the difference. As a Bend Oregon family photographer, I believe your experience should feel supported long before the session begins.

Showing up to a session with very little knowledge about the family is a big gamble on a photographer’s part.

That will never be your family session experience working with me in Bend. If you’ve seen my session offerings, you also saw that I mentioned ‘thoughtful guidance’ as part of the process. I’ve learned from my own experience why a photographer’s work needs to start before they pick up the camera.

Why session prep matters more than you think.

Because session prep isn’t just about logistics - it directly shapes how your photos feel.

If you have a bad experience taking the photos, it’s going to show up in your pictures and you won’t like looking at those memories.

In 2022, my family received devastating news that our hopes for a second biological child were never going to happen without the help of IVF. My husband and I decided to try to love our circumstances no matter what, so we decided to book a family session of our own.

I found someone whose work I liked, reached out, and we got booked with a local family photographer. I shared our infertility diagnosis with the photographer, and the initial response was empathetic.

Then literally nothing - the photographer ghosted us for months.

The night of the shoot was a complete mess. She struggled with my son, using methods that didn’t work for him. I could tell she was flustered and didn’t know how to direct us. But worst of all, she actually announced her own pregnancy to us during the session. I spent the whole time trying not to cry.

Honestly, I still hate those photos (which is why I’ve never shared them publicly). That whole experience taught me the hard way: a photographer who doesn’t pay attention can’t create cherished memories. This experience is exactly why I approach every Bend family photography session with intentional, thoughtful guidance from the very beginning.

Details that matter in the photoshoot prep process for your family.

This is where the family photoshoot experience comes into play. My work starts before the session date to ensure your individual needs are met. I want to know about your family! Whether you’re planning a motherhood, newborn, or family photography session in Bend or nearby areas like Sisters, Redmond, or Sunriver (start exploring the area here) your story shapes the entire experience.

A photographer that guides you through every step of the process is going to:

+ Give you tips on styling

+ Help you select a location that is meaningful and works for your family dynamics

+ Learn details about your family - like the age(s) of your kid(s) and how to make them laugh

+ check in with you to give reassurance and answer burning questions

+ help you get your memories off digital nowhere and into your home to enjoy every day

Over the years, I’ve noticed that my clients share struggles and triumphs with me because those details matter.

And if you’ve ever worried about how your kids will behave or whether your photos will actually feel like your family, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to figure that out on your own.

By the time we meet up for a session, you’ve already talked to me several times. You’ve got my cell number and we’ve been texting about outfit options. I’ll know whether your partner is camera-shy or if your kid likes facts about ocean animals. When we meet in real life for your photoshoot, we’ll spend a few minutes just chatting first, because breaking the ice is really easy when we’ve already been chipping away at it.

As a family photographer right here in Central Oregon, I believe that every unique story matters. You can be sure to end up with a gallery you love because your session was thoughtfully guided around your individual needs.
